Have you ever wondered how and why hashtags are used in the online arena. To be honest, when I first heard all the buzz about hashtags I really did not understand how they worked or how and why hashtags could be so powerful.

Hashtags were first originally used in programming language before becoming widely popular to social media. They can consist of a word or multi-word phrases using the (#) pound sign in front of them. Using the # symbol preceded by a word or phrase can help people search for a specific topic or keyword.

Using Hashtags have now been adopted to use across several social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, Google+, to more effectively categorize content and track targeted content. This helps users to find posts that interest them.

How and Why to Use Hashtags in your posts?

Using hashtags in your posts on social media can attract people that are looking for something specific. Check out Hashtags.org to see what is trending and would provide more engagement to your post. Generally, you want to use hashtags that are relevant to your topic but this is not always the case.

For example, you may feel emotional about the topic and use a hashtag like #soexcited or #thrilling. Simply put, a hashtag is an easy way for people to categorize, find and join conversations on a particular topic.

  • The How: Find the keywords that will attract readers on the topic and simply place the hash symbol (#) in front of the word or phrase. There is no need to use spaces between the words in a phrase. Often it is difficult to understand the hashtag when several words are all together, so you can capitalize the first word to solve this problem. For example: #ThrowBackThursday.
  • The Why: The internet is literally packed with some many posts all throughout social media, it is difficult to find a particular topic you are interested in reading. When hashtags are placed in a post the user can enter into the search bar using a hashtag and the topic or keyword to find what they are looking for. This helps solve the problem of having to wade through thousands upon thousands of unrelated posts.

Learning how to use hashtags is fundamental to your success on social media engagement. You can create your own hashtag to target the audience you want. For example, if your post is related to babies rather than using #parents, hone in on the target using #newmom.

Be careful not use to many hashtags in your post. According to analysis posts with nine hashtags receive the most engagement. Additionally, don’t create long hashtags with too many words. The idea is to make your tag searchable from any social media site.

A lot of people hoping to make money online are limited to working at it just a few hours per day or less. If you’re working a day job and are frustrated that you can’t spend more time becoming financially free, I have some good news for you. Using high power work sessions can help you reach your goals faster.

Do you know what’s even more effective than having more time to work? Getting as much as you possibly can out of the time you do have available.

The reason is that if you’re not focused and effective during a short period of time, then having all day would just mean more wasted time. As a mentor of mine once said, “If you can’t make money in your spare time, you can’t make money full-time.”

So, here are 5 proven tips I want to share, based on what modern neuroscience has shown (not motivational fluff), that will help you to get even closer to your income goals in less time.

Tip 1: How Our Brains Work Against Us

There’s a meme floating around called “Scumbag Brain” that jokes about how the human brain works against us sometimes instead of doing what we want it to. For example…It’s easy to get motivated, but hard to stay disciplined.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that gritting your teeth and relying on willpower alone is not enough.

Think of the last time you were on an exercise program that did not last. You went to the gym religiously for several weeks…until you caught a cold, or missed a day. Then, it was back to your old habits and behavior again—not to mention feelings of guilt and self-blame (which makes it even harder to bounce back).

The key is to avoid self-criticism by understanding how your mind works. We all get lazy or have setbacks. The key is to get back on track again quickly when (not if) it happens.

Tip 2: Schedule 90-120 Minute Time Blocks

The easiest way to get something done is to set a specific time and place to do it, and then show up when the time comes. Otherwise, your goals and plans are not concrete enough, and you can fall into the procrastination trap.

It’s also a fact that people can only stay focused and productive for 90 to 120 minutes at a time, before we need a rest or diversion. It’s impossible to stay ultra-productive all the time. Don’t even bother trying.

Instead, schedule blocks of time when you’ll be doing nothing but working, and when it’s over, STOP. Take a 15-20 minute break, or wrap it up for the day.

Also, treat your scheduled commitment to yourself as seriously as you would your job. Isn’t it just as important?

Tip 3: Prioritize Your Top 5 Items

It helps to list the top 5 tasks to accomplish each day, preferably the night before. Then, when the time comes to work, work on one thing at a time, starting with the most important action item of the day.

When it’s finished, move on to item #2, and so on, until done. Do NOT try to do two things at once! Multi-tasking is a myth and a joke.

It gives people the illusion that they are getting more done, but in reality you lose concentration while switching back and forth between items because it takes time for the mind to get caught up again.

Tip 4: Create an Environment for Focused Work

Your performance is affected by the environment you’re in and the tools available to you, positively or negatively, Give your body and mind what they need to perform by setting up your workspace for success.

Before you start, clear out the clutter and remove any potential distractions. Have only one window open on your computer. Get away from email, phone, and social media until your work block is over. You can schedule a separate session for phone calls and email.

I have also found that upbeat music helps me move more quickly, as long as it’s not too distracting (and no vocals—otherwise my mind pays attention to the lyrics).

Tip 5: Take a Fun Break!

Lastly, don’t forget to give yourself the rest you need, in order to have the concentration reserves you need to fuel your work.

So make a point to schedule periods each day for breaks, leisure, and fun as well as working on your business. This can prove to be just as important to be consistent in the long run!

Hopefully you will find these tips to be as helpful as they were for me while growing my own business!

As Instagram continues its meteoric rise in both monthly user base and saturation metrics, it makes sense for businesses to get on board. Statistics show that engagement rate on Instagram is much higher than either Facebook or Twitter. Not making Instagram a part of your marketing campaign is a mistake your business cannot afford to make.

With that in mind, here are a few strategies on how to grow your Instagram following:

Post Daily

Get into a regular flow when posting to Instagram, but don’t inundate your followers with content. A few times a day is probably the ideal number. Quality content combined with consistency will do more to drive up your number of followers than flooding their feeds will.

Share on a regular basis so you can discover what works best for you and your business. Provide creative, engaging content, and you’ll be rewarded with not only more supporters, but followers that are interested in your content.

Promote User Content

A great way to promote user content is to take fantastic content from other creators, and put it on your Instagram account. Be sure to give credit to the original producer of the material, though. Show off the unique and uncommon stories your users have to tell, and when you do, make sure to add hashtags that point back to your business.

Photo Contest

Photo contests are a fun way to share your brand while gathering photos from followers under a theme. Be sure to get involved in the contest yourself while sharing it across multiple platforms. But don’t be in a hurry. Allow users time to hear about the contest and participate.

Make sure the rules are clear and concise, so you avoid confusion with the contest. If you’re unsure of how to proceed, find a business to partner up and double the audience.

Understand Hashtags

Hashtags are an essential part of Instagram, and using the right hashtag can make the difference between a post that falls flat and one that shoots to the top of your followers feeds.

To determine the appropriate hashtags to use, peruse the content of those similar to your own. You can search for and record hashtags that are relevant to your brand, then use them in your content to drive traffic to your business.

Filter Selection

Instagram filters are fun, but also a little confusing. Which ones should you use to drive views and engagement? Pay attention to the responses you receive depending on the filter you use. Some tend to lead to more views, while others may contribute to a higher number of comments. Play around with them and find the ones that work best for your business.

Engage

Really engage with your followers. A list of all the greatest tips and tricks will be helpful, but they’re never going to compete with rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty on the platform. Be intentional about leaving thoughtful, engaging comments, like photos that strike you as meaningful.

Find new people to follow on a regular basis, interact with them, and respond to their questions and comments. Doing so will result in natural and organic growth for your Instagram platform.

It never fails, you received a free eBook about the most effective posing times and get excited to read about the latest, and best, way to utilized Social Media posting for your business.  You hungrily tear through the information. Then re-write your marketing plan to implement this new strategy only to receive entirely different information the next day, week, month, and so on.

Choosing the Most Effective Social Media Posting Times can boost your engagement with your audience.

Fortunately, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to CoSchedule.  In their great wisdom, they have put together information from a variety of reports to provide you with the last word in Social Media Post schedules.

We learned in school that there are 4 time zones in the U.S. So, with clients spread from sea to shining sea, what are the best times to post on the various social media platforms?

To decide this, we need to take into consideration where most of these clients are living.  According to Census records, 80% of those people living in the United States are found in the Eastern and Central time zones.  It would make sense, then, to focus our schedules on time as it is followed in those locations.

Facebook

As the platform that brought social media into the spotlight and taught us a new way to communicate and market ourselves and our businesses, it’s still the first account most new businesses, and 13-year olds, open when getting started in the Social Media universe.

Best Days: Sunday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
Best Times: 9 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm

Notes:  Posting at 1 pm gets you the most shares while posting at 3 pm will get you the most clicks.

Twitter

Best Day:  Wednesday
Best Times: Noon, 3 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm

Notes: Wednesday about Noon and between 5-6 are the peak moments of an employee’s break times.  Also, Twitter users are 181% more likely to be on their account during the commute home. Hopefully, for the rest of us, this refers to carpoolers who are not in the driver’s seat.

LinkedIn

Best Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Best Times: 7-8am, Noon, and 5-6pm

Notes:  Business people are most likely to peruse LinkedIn in the morning, in the same manner many (used to) peruse the paper.  Also, even though LinkedIn is geared more for the business market, the best time to post is still before or after work.

Pinterest

Best Days: Weekends (Saturday and Sunday)
Best Times: 2 pm, 9 pm, and 2 am

Notes:  The best window for posting is Saturday nights between 8-11pm. The worst time is during business hours.

Instagram

Best Days: Monday and Thursday
Best Times: 2am, 8-9am, 5pm

Notes:  Avoid posting between 3 pm and 4 pm.  Posting a video at 9 pm can get you 34% more interactions.

Google+

Best Day:  Wednesday
Best Time: 9am, 11am, 12-1pm

Notes: 90% of people on Google+ are lurkers, people who are just looking and not wanting or perhaps not ready to engage with the content or a call to action.

Additional Notes for Each Platform

Facebook: Widely used both via mobile and stationary devices, at home and at work.

Twitter: Audience dependent, as Facebook is also. Often set up as an RSS feed and visited during commutes, breaks and other down times.

Pinterest:  Used mostly in the evenings after work and on the weekends during a viewer’s free time.

LinkedIn:  Designed for the professional world, viewers use it during work hours and in the mornings.

Google+:  Targets professionals in a similar manner to LinkedIn

Instagram: Designed for the mobile platform and therefore used at any time.

Hi there, Donna sands here from DonnaSands.net. I’m so happy and glad that you joined me today. I wanted to talk with you a little bit about social media and how to get things started with your business. Social media is a really great place to start. We all seem to be involved in social media outlets these days. With billions of people go onto Facebook daily, that is where I chose to start building my business.

First~ Creating a business fan page in Facebook and start building friends is a great way to start. Once you have a good understanding of Facebook, you will be ready to expand into other social media outlets. By no means do you need to be an expert so continue learning all you can and in time you will become better and better.

To create your business fan page go to your personal Facebook page and up in the top right-hand corner, click the down arrow and select Create Page.

Second~you will be brought to a page that allows you to select what your new page is all about. Select what works best for you. I would recommend Company, but it is totally up to you.

Third~ Now you are ready to start building your page. Brand yourself with a banner cover photo of you or what you want to share. Your lifestyle with family, maybe places you have traveled or a favorite inspirational quote. Continue to complete all sections of your new page. You will want to go through and fill out every portion in the About section. And don’t forget to have a compelling Intro. People want to know who you are and what you like to do.

Fourth~Once you have completed all the sections now you are ready to start posting. Start by marketing YOU. Brand YOU. Talk more about yourself, what you like to do, your family. Talk in general to provide quality content to people about the benefits of your products or service you provide without naming the company. You want to open up that curiosity factor to people to reach out to you and ask what is it that you’re talking about and find interest to ask questions.
Fifth~This now opens the door to either connect with people on messenger or through private message. Here you can get to know your prospect one on one, find out their pain and needs and get to know them.
Overall, consistency is another very very important factor in building your business and Branding YOU. A good practice is to post on your business Facebook page between two and three a day. If you can do as many as five or six that’s great. Facebook likes to see your interaction.
Use your timeline to share posts such as inspirational motivational pictures, share other peoples post. Videos are great….. people love them. Think about the way you experience Facebook.
