What makes you want to click on a link and read a blog post? A compelling headline. This is a concept that has been around long before the Internet was a thing. How do you think that advertisers worked back in the day when the only resources they had available were newspaper ads? They wrote headlines that would leave the customer wanting to know more. You should do the same when you write a blog post so that the person has no other choice but to click the link.

Clickbait

Whaaat, Clickbait? Yes, Another proven method of increasing blog traffic is using clickbait. Yes, it has become a dirty word among online advertisers, however, if done correctly, you can use clickbait to your advantage without tricking your target audience into visiting your site. You do that by simply backing up the click-through link with honest and truthful content.

Clickbaits are quite common in social media. The basic concept of ‘clickbait’ is to create a melodramatic title for an online article so as to manipulate people into clicking the link and reading the content. Honestly, clickbait is a smart idea for publicity but, the way it has taken over social media over bland content is quite annoying.

Here’s an example of a Clickbait headline: “Man tries to hug a wild lion’ (omg! why did he do that?)”. Now, odds are most people would click on this link to read the story. The storyline would need to lead into quality content that is congruent with the brand of the website.

Content Length-Word Count

The next tip is to make sure you have the right content length to make it viral. An online viral content publisher showed that they get the most shares with content that ranges from 3000 to 10000 words. They received more than 7.5k shares with that content compared to just under 5k shares with blogs that had less than 1000 words.

Remember the more words you have, the more opportunities you will have to add SEO (Search Engine  Optimization) keywords and phrases, backlinks, and other helpful extras that will bring more traffic to your company blog. However, many blog readers tend to zone out when they have thousands of words to read. Some appreciate shorter content that gets to the point faster. So, which is truly better?

Even though shorter posts may seem more popular, the best option is still more words. While everyone else is still writing 500-word posts, your longer and detailed blogs will stand out among your competitors. Plus, longer posts are great for organic leads which will make your content shareable and evergreen. That means that your blog content will have staying power and it can be repurposed multiple times.

Content is King

Aside from an alluring headline, clickbait, and word count, you need to have an amazing idea for your blog topic so that it will go viral on social media. To do that, you need to learn more about your target audience. What are their interests? Their age groups? What type of content could you write that will get your consumers to click the link to find out more? If you’re still unsure about content ideas, you can visit websites such as Buzzsumo or Ubersuggest to generate ideas for you.

Check out the comments on your company’s Facebook page or read up on reviews. Are there products or services that your target audience would like to see from your brand? Are there issue that they would like to resolve? Gather ideas from these resources to help give your traffic a boost.

The best thing that you can do for your company’s blog is to use what works best for your brand. If you had a surge in visitor’s months ago with a post that contained humor, adding more humor. Your blog doesn’t always need just facts, humor can help. People like to read something that’s upbeat and lighthearted occasionally, and humorous posts are more likely to be shared on social media.

Before you start writing your article, you should make a list of the main topics, tips, or ideas that you want to discuss. Use this list to create your subheaders.

This same rule applies whether you’re writing a blog post, website copy, a product review, or sales copy. For example, with sales copy, you’d make a list of the features that you want to discuss. These would then become individual paragraphs with their own subheader.

The subheaders break up the content and make it easier to read. This also helps you stay on track and remain focused on the initial purpose of your content.

#2 Present the Main Problem at the Beginning of Your Content

Always start your content with the main problem that you’re about to address. For example, at the beginning of this article, I mentioned that the biggest obstacle is generating fresh content. These tips help you learn how to overcome this problem by creating your own content.

Address the problem early, possibly identify a few pain points of your readers, and then mention how this article will help solve the problem.

That is the overall structure of your opening paragraphs. You’re getting the reader’s attention by identifying a problem and then you’re telling them how you’ll solve it.

#3 Use Short Paragraphs to Improve Readability

There are several factors that determine readability. First, you need to think about the structure of your content. As mentioned, including subheaders can help break up the content. Adding images and graphics can also help with this.

But, there are a few other ways to improve readability and they all have to do with your writing. You need to use short words, sentences, and paragraphs. Though, the paragraphs are the biggest concern.

Typically, you will want an average paragraph length of 2 to 3 sentences. Preferably, the sentence length should be less than 12 words. You can also replace long words with shorter synonyms.

Don’t make the mistake of over-explaining a topic. By using short paragraphs, you’ll find it easier to remain focused on the main points that you want to address.

#4 Don’t Edit Your Content Until You’re Done Writing

Hold off on editing your content until you’ve finished your initial draft. If you start editing as you write, you’ll find that it takes much longer to finish writing.

After you’ve finished writing, remember to proofread. Use the spell checker in your word processor and then read the entire content line by line. This will help you catch any grammatical errors that weren’t found by the spell checker.
